Executive Function Coaching for College Students

Success in school, and also at work, requires more than intelligence. Executive functioning skills such as self-control, sticking with a task until it is finished, and creative and flexible problem solving are just as important for success. Executive Function Coaching helps students improve these skills for better academic performance and school/life balance.

Executive functioning skills are like any other skills you might want to improve, like pitching a baseball or playing the piano. With regular practice, your skills will improve. In sports, a coach can teach you how to improve your technique and conditioning and can even motivate you to become a better athlete. But the coach can’t do the work for you. In school, an executive function coach can’t study for you, but the coach can help you focus your efforts so that your hard work is more likely to pay off.

How can I tell if difficulties with executive functioning are affecting my school performance?

Signs that you might be struggling with executive functioning skills include:

  • You put off studying or writing papers until the last minute and have trouble meeting
    deadlines.
  • You struggle to remember information during exams and your grades don’t reflect what
    you are capable of.
  • Your grades are good, but the enormous amount of time you spend studying leaves little
time for fun activities, or even sleep.

How does Executive Function Coaching work?

Step 1 – A Comprehensive Intake

Dr. Palav meets with you in person to collect detailed information about your executive functioning skills and learning strategies. With your consent, your parent may also be contacted for information.

Dr. Palav works with you to identify one or more long-term goals that you would like to achieve. She works with you to develop a clear, realistic plan for meeting these goals.

Step 2 – Regular Coaching Sessions

Every week, Dr. Palav meets with you one-on-one to:

  • Map out a schedule for completing assignments and studying for tests.
  • Introduce and practice new strategies to add to your “toolbox” of executive functioning and study skills.

Between meetings, Dr. Palav checks in with you to make sure you stay on track for the week. Check-ins can be done by email, phone call, or text – whatever works best for you.
