Executive Function Coaching for Middle and High School Students

Success in school, and later at work, requires more than intelligence. Executive functioning skills such as self-control, sticking with a task until it is finished, and creative and flexible problem solving are just as important for success. Executive Function Coaching helps students improve these skills for better academic performance and school/life balance.

Executive functioning skills are like any other skills your child might want to improve, like pitching a baseball or playing the piano. With instruction in good technique and regular practice, those skills will improve. Executive Function Coaching guides students through learning new skills and developing new habits, in order to help them succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

How can I tell if difficulties with executive functioning are affecting my child’s school performance?

Signs that your child might be struggling with executive functioning skills include:

  • Poor Organization – has a messy desk/book bag, forgets or misplaces books and assignments, forgets to turn in homework
  • Difficulty Managing Projects – gets overwhelmed by long-term projects, puts off work until the last minute
  • Inconsistent or Poor Grades – spends a lot of time studying but does poorly on tests, seems to know information one day but to forget it the next day
  • Poor Self-Control – makes careless errors, lets emotions get in the way of completing tasks

How will Executive Function Coaching benefit my child?

Short-term benefits of Executive Function Coaching include:

  • Improved grades
  • Increased self-confidence and academic motivation
  • Reduced stress and arguments about homework

Ultimately, Executive Function Coaching helps your child to achieve his or her long-term academic goals more independently.

Who will be coaching my child?

Anjali Palav, PhD, the founder of EF Advantage, works directly with all students. Dr. Palav is a clinical neuropsychologist who has helped students and their families understand learning and behavioral challenges for more than 10 years. To date, she has performed over 1,000 comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, including assessment of executive functioning skills. Read more about Dr. Palav here.

How does Executive Function Coaching work?

Step 1 – A Comprehensive Intake

  • Dr. Palav meets with you and your child in person to collect detailed information about his or her current executive functioning strengths/weaknesses and learning strategies.
  • Dr. Palav works with your child to identify one or more long-term goals that he or she is motivated to achieve. Together they develop a clear, realistic plan for meeting these goals.

Step 2 – Regular Coaching Sessions

Every week, Dr. Palav meets one-on-one with your child to:

  • Map out a schedule for completing assignments and studying for tests.
  • Introduce and practice new strategies to add to his or her “toolbox” of executive functioning and study skills.

Between meetings, Dr. Palav checks in with your child to make sure he or she stays on track for the week. Check-ins can be done by email, phone call, or text – whatever works best for your child.
