Organizational Skills Training for Elementary School Students

Success in school requires more than intelligence. Strong organization, time management, and task planning skills are just as important for success.
Organizational Skills Training
helps students improve these skills for better academic performance.

How can I tell if weaknesses in organization, time management, and task planning skills are affecting my child’s school performance?

Signs that your child might be struggling with these skills include:

  • Forgetting what homework has been assigned
  • Not being able to find needed papers or supplies in his or her desk and backpack
  • Having trouble judging how much time homework will take
  • Struggling to develop a schedule for completing projects on time

What is Organizational Skills Training (OST)?

OST is a research supported program for elementary school students (grades 3-5). Students learn and practice skills in four areas that are important for school success:

  1. Tracking assignments and tests
  2. Managing school materials
  3. Estimating time demands
  4. Planning a strategy for larger projects

How will Organizational Skills Training (OST) benefit my child?

Benefits of OST include:

  • Improved grades
  • Increased self-confidence and academic motivation
  • Reduced stress and arguments about homework

Ultimately, OST helps prepare your child to successfully meet the increased academic demands of middle school.

Who will be working with my child?

Anjali Palav, PhD, the founder of EF Advantage, works directly with all students. Dr. Palav is a clinical neuropsychologist who has helped students and their families understand learning and behavioral challenges for more than 10 years. To date, she has performed over 1,000 comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, including assessment of planning, organization, and other executive functioning skills. Read more about Dr. Palav here.

How does Organizational Skills Training (OST) work?

Step 1 – A Comprehensive Intake

Dr. Palav meets with you and your child in person to collect detailed information about his or her organization and planning skills, as well as learning strategies.

Step 2 – Regular OST Sessions

  • Each session, Dr. Palav works one-on-one with your child, teaching him or her a new skill. She provides guidance and feedback as your child practices the new skill.
  • Between sessions, you and your child’s teacher will be asked to help with prompting your child to use the new skill and with praising him or her for using it. This will help your child develop the habit of using the new skill consistently.
